Akagera's Big Five
Lions were successfully reintroduced to Akagera in 2015, and black rhinos followed in 2017. Combined with resident elephant, buffalo, and leopard populations, Akagera is now one of Africa's great comeback conservation stories.
Best Time to Visit
June to September is peak dry season — wildlife concentrates around the lakes and is easiest to spot. January-February also offers good game viewing with fewer tourists.
Getting Around
Self-drive is possible but guided game drives with park rangers dramatically increase sightings. Boat safaris on Lake Ihema are particularly spectacular for hippo, croc, and bird watching.
