Rwanda's western lake offers beach resorts, island hopping, and spectacular Congo sunset views.

Why Lake Kivu?

Lake Kivu stretches 89km along Rwanda's western border with the Democratic Republic of Congo. At 1,460m altitude, it's one of Africa's highest major lakes, with a cool climate and calm volcanic waters.

Best Bases

Rubavu (Gisenyi) in the north offers the most beach-resort infrastructure. Kibuye in the centre is quieter and more scenic. Rusizi in the south is the gateway to the Rusizi River delta hippo habitat.

Activities

Kayaking, fishing boat tours, Napoleon Island bat colony viewing, and sundowner cruises are the highlights. Most resorts offer water sports equipment rental.
