Rwanda's Nyungwe Forest: Africa's Best Canopy Walk
Emmanuel Habimana
guide
Walking 70m above an ancient rainforest is one of East Africa's most extraordinary experiences.
The Canopy Walk
Nyungwe Forest National Park's canopy walkway is Africa's longest — 200m of suspension bridges strung 70m above the forest floor. The views across the ancient forest canopy to the Congo hills beyond are breathtaking.
Getting There
Nyungwe is a 4-5 hour drive from Kigali via the Congo-Nile Trail scenic route along Lake Kivu. The drive itself is one of Rwanda's great road journeys.
What Else to Do
Pair the canopy walk with chimpanzee tracking (90-120 minutes of habituated chimp time), the Waterfall Trail to Kamiranzovu, or the full-day Mount Bigugu summit hike.
