Gorilla Trekking: What to Expect
Rwanda offers one of the world's most extraordinary wildlife experiences — trekking through volcanic rainforest to spend an hour with mountain gorilla families. Here's everything you need to know.
Getting Your Permit
Gorilla permits cost $1,500 per person and must be booked in advance through the Rwanda Development Board or a licensed tour operator like Hilly Agency. Permits sell out months ahead, especially for peak season (June-September, December-January).
What to Wear
Long-sleeved shirts, long trousers, and sturdy waterproof hiking boots are essential. The forest is dense and full of stinging nettles. A rain jacket is non-negotiable.
Physical Preparation
Treks range from 1-8 hours depending on gorilla family location. Moderate fitness is required. Porters are available and highly recommended — they carry bags and help on steep sections.
